City of Eau Claire looks to extend bike trail

Eau Claire (WQOW) - An area where rail cars rumbled through Eau Claire's northwest side could now become a place where walkers, bikers and rollerbladers glide.
The city is hoping to buy a mile long stretch of land that used to be a railroad and convert it to a multi-use trail.
The piece of land goes from Roosevelt elementary school to the high bridge over the Chippewa river. It would connect the northwest side of Eau Claire to downtown once the high bridge is re-decked for the trail.

"It enhances the opportunity for people on the westside of Eau Claire to get to downtown in a safe and enjoyable manner with the multipurpose trail," said Public Works Director Phil Fieber.

The trail could open this summer. The city has received a grant to cover half of the $55,000 project. The City Council has final approval on purchasing the land.
