Increased cost for parking ramp explained

Eau Claire (WQOW) - We're learning more about the cost to build a new parking ramp in downtown Eau Claire.

A few years ago, the city estimated the cost to build a parking ramp on the site of the current post office to be about $7.7 million. Earlier this month, the city was presented with two options that went much higher than that in the neighborhood of $10 million.

The city engineer says there are a number of reasons for the higher estimate:  one is the cost to build has increased.  Also, the new options include an additional 40 parking spots.

"We would rather have the project come in under budget or at our revised budget," said Dave Solberg. "We'd rather plan for the worse case and improve the design than so we bring it in at a best case cost. Usually contingencies are higher earlier in the design process because there are more unknowns. As you determine solutions to those unknowns the contingency is brought down and you try to refine the cost lower."

The city hopes to have a design firm picked for the ramp by the end of next week.  The city has not approved the project.
