UPDATE: Man who lead officers on high speed chase arrested on suspicion of drunk driving


Eau Claire County (WQOW)- A high speed chase through Eau Claire county ends with an arrest. It started Saturday night around 9 o'clock.  

The sheriff's department says police attempted to pull the driver over on Highway 10 near Fairchild for speeding, but he didn't stop. He then led officers on a chase as speeds hit 100 miles per hour. That chase ended in Augusta where the sheriff's department says they were able to deflate the tires with spikes.  

The driver, Kyle Smith of Durand, was arrested. The sheriff's department is looking into possible drunk driving charges.  


News Release (Eau Claire County Sheriff's Department) At approximately 9:04 P.M. on April 26, 2014 an Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to stop a vehicle on US HWY 10 in the Town of Fairchild. The operator failed to comply with the traffic stop and attempted to elude the Deputy. The Deputy, assisted by Officers from the Augusta and Osseo Police Departments pursued the suspect.

A second Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Deputy arrived and successfully deployed a controlled tire deflation device, ending the pursuit.

The adult male suspect was taken into custody for the violations and multiple arrest warrants.

Kyle J. Smith, 27 of Durand was taken into custody after refusing to pull over and attempting to elude a Deputy.

Smith was arrested and is being held in the Eau Claire County Jail on the following charges:

·        Knowingly Flee an Officer

·        Operating while under the influence 1st Offense

·        Operating while revoked driving status

·        Arrest Warrants (2)

County (WQOW) - A man leads police on a high speed chase Saturday night. It started around 9pm. The Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Department says police attempted to pull the man over on Highway 10 near Fairchild for speeding and he didn’t stop.

They say he lead officers on a chase of speeds up to 100 miles per hour. The sheriff’s department says the chase ended in Augusta when they were able to deflate the tires with spikes. They say the suspect was taken into custody, no one was injured. 

They say there are several warrants out on the suspect. They say no charges have been filed yet, but are looking into a possible operating while intoxicated and operating a vehicle without consent. His name has not been released yet.
