Local Red Cross volunteers head south for storm clean up
Eau Claire (WQOW) A tornado hit Meridian, Miss. and Eau Claire volunteers from the Red Cross are rushing to help.
Dave Nuesse is a disaster assessment supervisor for the trip to Meridian. He is in charge of determining the extent of damage in an area and how many people will need help. He said he is ready to take on this assignment.
"We have experience," he said. "We've done this before and we know that by helping out in this particular case, we'll be meeting the needs of people who have been severely impacted by the disaster."
Donna Borner is a shelter supervisor for the mission. She takes care of the families within the shelter. She said the struggle for these families is heartbreaking.
"A lot of times it's the devastation can be overwhelming to them," she said. "They don't know where to turn next, what to do. They don't know where a change of clothing is."
Borner said the people affected by the tornado are struggling, but the Red Cross will help as many people as they can.
