Madison International Speedway opens season, Brust special guest

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) - The Madison International Speedway opened up its 2014 racing season on Sunday afternoon with the ARCA Midwest Tour Joe Shear Classic. The speedway has made some unique changes to its operation in 2014 to entice its fans. The track is bringing back Super Late Model cars, and its also going back to Friday night races under the lights starting May 23.

Former Wisconsin basketball player Ben Brust was at the track Sunday. He served as the honorary starter as he waived the green flag, starting the featured race. Brust has recently become a die-hard fan of auto racing, after his brother-in-law got him interested in the sport about four years ago. Brust is currently training to try and play basketball professionally, but with his new connections in racing, he hopes he can someday try out a car on a racetrack.
