Cadott (WQOW) -- Some of the best archers in the country are right here in the western Wisconsin. On Friday, the Cadott archery team will make their 8th-straight trip to the national tournament.

"When we started this thing, I just wanted it to be a unit in the phy ed and teach kids about archery. It just blossomed from there," says coach Scott Christenson. "We went down there and won the first state title and since then it's been history. We now have to have tryouts. It's something that has been unbelievable, beyond my expectations."

28 archers, boys and girls, make up this year's squad. In competition, the final score is taken from the team's top twelve archers.

"'I've tried before to pick my top 12 at a tournament and I get it wrong every single time. It just seems to amaze me," adds Christenson. "That's the great thing about the team aspect of it, you just never know who's going to show up."

In February, the Cadott archery team won their 6th state title in nine years. Their 3,369 points at this year's tournament is a new state record.

"We practice a lot of routine things," says junior Kaeden Thom. "It's not just going in the morning and shooting. Our coach helps us a lot, he makes sure that we're doing the right thing and the same thing."

"We start in November and we're here Monday, Wednesday and Friday until May. Basically, our success is attributed to our practice. All of my teammates are very dedicated to this sport," adds senior Lexi Siverling.

Archery is a sport of discipline and repetition. Cadott certainly has the latter down. The team will make their 8th-straight trip to nationals on Friday. The Hornets believe they have a good shot to bring home some hardware.

"The majority of our team that has been there and seen what happens. So I think that really gives them an edge. When they know what to expect that really makes a difference," says Christenson.

Siverling adds: "I believe our chances are very high. Last year we got 11th at nationals and I feel like our team has improved from last year. I feel very confident in my team being successful this year."

Cadott is one of five local schools making the trip to Louisville, Kentucky. Gilman, Augusta, Cornell and Elk Mound will also shoot for a national title.
