Routes will run as normal Monday after weekend fire at Boxx Sanitation

Eau Claire (WQOW)- Despite a fire the owners of a local waste and recycling removal service say routes will run as normal on Monday.

Eau Claire fire crews were called to fight flames at Boxx Sanitation on Mondovi Road around 5:30 Saturday evening.   What caused the fire is still under investigation, but damage has been estimated at about $250,000.  No one was hurt. The building that caught fire contained garbage and recyclables.
Fire officials say burning embers, carried by the wind, led to a small grass fire nearby.   The Red Cross was there to provide food and water to firefighters.

Eau Claire Fire Dept. (News Release) -
Eau Claire Fire and Rescue was dispatched to a structure fire at Boxx Sanitation at 5:29 p.m. When units arrived on scene they reported a fire inside the middle to rear area of a building that stores garbage and recyclables. The building is detached and is approximately 100 feet by 100  feet. A second alarm requesting more resources to the scene was called. Burning embers and wind caused a grass/brush fire near Short Street and the bike trail. Township Fire Department was called to assist with the grass/brush fire. Approximately 40 firefighters were on scene extinguishing the fire at Boxx Sanitation and grass/brush fire.

Township Fire Department, Chippewa Fire District, and Altoona Fire Department assisted Eau Claire with mutual aid with coverage within the City during the fire. The Red Cross assisted with food and rehab for on scene fire crews.

Eau Claire Fire Department units are still on scene and will be throughout the day today extinguishing hot spots. The total damage cost is about $250,000. The fire is still under investigation. No civilian or firefighter injuries reported.
