Fallen officers remembered and honored in Eau Claire

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Various law enforcement agencies came together in Eau Claire Wednesday morning to honor their brothers and sisters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The memorial ceremony began with a vehicle procession leading to the Florian Gardens in Eau Claire. Heartfelt remarks were given by law enforcement representatives. A gun salute was followed by the playing of Taps and a reading of the names of 49 officers from northwestern Wisconsin who have died while protecting their communities.

Boyceville Police Chief Daniel Wellumson commented on the importance of the ceremony, saying, "If we don't recognize those who gave their all for the benefit of others, we will forget, and remembering those lost, I just believe that it's crucial in order to remember. We need to remember."

This week is known as "Police Week". Tens of thousands of officers travel to Washington DC to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect others.
