Pair of Wisconsin natives earn Big Ten postgraduate scholarships

MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin men’s cross country and track and field runner Michael Brice and women’s hockey goaltender Ilana Friedman will receive Big Ten Conference Postgraduate Scholarships, the league announced Thursday.

A native of Kaukauna, Wisconsin, Brice will graduate with a degree in special education and will attend law school at Wisconsin. A two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Brice helped the Badgers win the 2011 NCAA Cross Country title. In 2011, he earned NCAA Great Lakes all-region honors and was named the Big Ten Track Runner of the Week.

Friedman was a valuable member of the women’s hockey squad, serving in a variety of roles for the Badgers. A two-time All-WCHA Academic Team honoree, Friedman dressed in more than 80 games for the Badgers as UW appeared in two Frozen Fours during her career. A native of Middleton, Friedman graduates this week with a degree in history and will attend law school this fall.

One male and one female student-athlete from each of the 12 Big Ten institutions who plan to continue their education in a graduate-degree program were awarded a $7,500 scholarship. Student-athletes must have been in their final season of NCAA eligibility, maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intend to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree in a graduate degree program.
