Eau Claire (WQOW) - Something as simple as a bench could strengthen the three R's at an Eau Claire school...but not the R's you're probably thinking of.
On Wednesday, Manz Elementary received a $500 Tools for Schools grant. The school will use the money to buy a buddy bench. The concept is simple. When a child does not have someone to play with, they take a seat on the buddy bench. Their peers will be encouraged to reach out if they see the bench occupied. The hope is to build relationships, respect and responsibility.
"There's a lot of students out there that have a difficult time joining an activity, and so I think it's a really great way for those students to have a place to go and then others to be able to show kindness to those students and ask them to join in their game, just to help make sure that everyone here is included," says Jaime Burse, a Title I resource teacher at Manz Elementary.
Tools for Schools is a partnership between Royal Credit Union, Fired Up Pizza and Eau Claire's own News 18. Click here if you'd like to apply for the next $500 award.
