ECASD plans call for more tech devices in classrooms

Eau Claire (WQOW) - More students in Eau Claire may soon be learning with the help of new technology.

The Eau Claire Area School District plans to purchase 1,400 iPads for use at Northstar and South Middle schools and launch a pilot with Google Chromebook in grade 7. The district also plans to have 1,400 Google Chromebooks in English classrooms at all high schools. This year's budget includes over $850,000 for the iPads. Next year's budget would include the cost of the chromebooks, over $350,000.

Jim Schmitt, the director of assessment and technology for the Eau Claire Area School District, said, "It's becoming harder and harder to survive without it. In addition, all the of the state assessments that are coming online by the beginning of next year, are going to be done electronically. Other than the ACT in grade 11 for the juniors, everything else is an electronic assessment. So, really to prepare our students for that experience so they can show what they can and know what they can do, we really want them to be in that environment as much as possible."

Schmitt said if the board of education approves the purchase of the Chromebooks and iPads, they will be used in classrooms this fall.
