Stolen truck sighting triggers search by boat and canine in Jackson County

 News Release (Jackson County)- At 10:24 AM, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a gas drive-off at the Melrose Express gas station. The responding Deputy made contact with the vehicle, a white ford pickup with Minnesota License Plate, on HWY 54 near county Hwy H in Albion Township of Jackson County.  It was found that the vehicle involved was a vehicle that was reported stolen from Winona County.  When deputies made an attempt to stop the vehicle, the suspects started a short vehicle pursuit and then fled on foot.

Deputies received a report that the suspects had been seen by a fisherman crossing the Black River heading east to Hawk Island.

Boats and canines were brought in to track the suspects.  After an hour or longer search, witnesses saw suspects following the Black River in the area of Haugstad Road.  The canine successfully tracked the suspects and they were taken into custody.

Suspects were identified as:

 Joel Michael Johnson, 19yoa, Alberta Lea, MN.

 Mitchell Neil Winslow, 18yoa, Alberta Lea, MN.

Pending Charges: Both suspects are being charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Owner Consent Driver and Passenger, 2nd degree reckless endangerment, obstructing, and Misdemeanor Theft.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin DNR, Black River Falls Police Department and Black River Falls Fire Department.
