Andersen talks quarterback battle

Posted: Updated:
RIVER FALLS (WKOW) - Fall camp is still a few weeks away for Gary Andersen. So, the Badger head coach took some time to travel to River Falls for a fundraiser golf tournament. Andersen rubbed elbows with fans. Many of those Badger faithful are curious about how the quarterback battle will play out this fall.

Joel Stave is the incumbent starter but hasn't blown anyone away in his first two seasons. Since day one, Andersen has voiced his preference for a play-making quarterback more so than just a game-manager. That is why Tanner McEvoy, who spent last season at safety, is back in the mix.

"The quarterback, at the end of the day, does need to change the game in a positive way four, five, six times a game if you're going to be a great football team, in a positive way, not in a negative way and then manage the game successfully."

McEvoy spent the spring getting reps while Stave nursed an injury. Now, the stage is set for a starting battle in the fall.

"We're in the middle of that battle. Tanner is handling it well. Joel is handling it well. Joel came back, seems to be healthy and ready to go. So, they're ready for the competition."
