Fatal fire in Black River Falls

Jackson County (WQOW)-  Around 9 o'clock Sunday morning neighbors noticed smoke coming from a home on Fillmore Street in Black River Falls. When firefighters arrived flames and heavy black smoke could be seen shooting from the windows.  

Crews learned one person had made it out safely, another was still inside.  Firefighters entered the home quickly and were able to find that person, but sadly, they had already passed away.  

The Black River Falls fire chief says no names are being released as officials work to contact family members.An autopsy will take place Monday to determine cause of death.  

The home is badly damaged and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.  

The Red Cross was there to assist.

News Release (Black River Falls Fire Dept.) The Jackson County Emergency Dispatch Center (EDC) paged the Black River Falls Fire Department on June 15, 2014 at 09:04 for smoke coming from a home at 714 Fillmore Street in the City of Black River Falls. 
At the time of the page out, the EDC was reporting that one person was believed to still be within the home.
Upon arrival the department found heavy fire venting out a large window of a two story single family wood frame home. Heavy black smoke was also coming from the structure. 
 It was confirmed that one party was still within the structure. 
The department did quickly locate the party inside the structure and then remove the party outside of the structure where Black River Emergency Medical Service gave care. No signs of life were found and the party was declared deceased at the scene.
The name of the deceased party is being withheld until family notification came be made.
An autopsy will be conducted in Madison on Monday, June 16, 2014 to determine a cause of death.
The 32’ x 34’ structure has heavy fire damage on the first floor and with heat and smoke damage on the second floor.
The fire cause and the death investigation remain under investigation by the Black River Falls Fire Department, State of Wisconsin Fire Marshalls Office and Black River Falls Police Department. 
The department was assisted on scene by the Hixton Fire Department who was requested as mutual aid. 
The Black River Falls Police Department and Sheriff’s Department conducted traffic control - direction.
The home is owned by Norman and Margie Johnson and is insured. A damage estimate is not known at this time. 
The occupants were assisted on the scene by the American Red Cross. 
The department was on the scene just over two (2) hours with 16 firefighters and used an estimated 7,000 gallons of water to extinguish.
No firefighters were reported injured during the fire.
