Powless' love for tennis keeps powering on

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Age has not slowed down John Powless' love for the game of tennis. At 81 years old, Powless is the top tennis player in the world in his age group. In seven decades in the sport, Powless has built up quite the resume. He has won numerous national and international tennis titles, including the 1999 U.S. Senior Open title. Powless was named the Senior Tennis Player of the Millennium in 1999 and was inducted into the United States Tennis Hall of Fame in 2000.

"You've got the youngers that will come and watch the olders and they'll say, boy, I hope I can still be competitive, and I can still play when I get to that age. So in some respects you're an inspiration to those people," Powless said.

The game has given a lot to Powless and he does his best to give back. Powless opened up his own tennis facility in Madison, the John Powless Tennis Center, where he and his son help spread their love for the game with tennis players of tomorrow.

Powless career in tennis has seen its obstacles. He's had both knees replaced and has dealt with injuries to his shoulder and achilles. Even with his 82nd birthday right around the corner, Powless doesn't seem himself slowing down anytime soon.

"As long as I'm alive, I'm going to keep playing," Powless said.
