Log Rolling Championships make splash in Madison

Posted: Updated:
MADISON, WI (WKOW) -- The Midwest Log Rolling Championships rolled into downtown Madison this past weekend. Four-time log rolling world champion and Madison native Shana Verstegen was one of the marquee participants.

The event is in its tenth year and helps raise money for the Huntington's Disease Society of America, a disease that took her mother from her just last year. Just before the weekend's festivities began, Verstegen found out she did not have the disease.

Verstegen oversaw the amateur competition Saturday, with kids from all over the state competing.

She says she is proud to help build the next generation of the sport.

"Running Madison-area log rolling has been the greatest thing that's ever happened to me," said Verstegen, "because as a child it was my chance to escape and have fun. Now, I'm watching the next generation do the same thing, and they're making friends. The coolest thing about today isn't necessarily the competition, it's the kids goofing around after and staying for the fireworks and those are the memories that are made."
