Long-time Menards employee dies after incident on the job

Eau Claire (WQOW) - A man has died after an incident that happened while he was working at Menards in Eau Claire.  OSHA is now investigating.

OSHA says Gary Henkey was injured Friday while working at the Menards Warranty Center, part of the Old Mill Center off of the North Crossing. Hankey had been a Menards employee since 1997. He was 73 years old. A Menards spokesperson says on Friday, Henkey was seen lying on the floor and struggling to get up. He was taken by ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital, where he died three days later, on Monday.

Menards issued this statement:

“While working at the Menards DC Warranty Center last Friday afternoon, one of our long-time Team Members, Mr. Gary Henkey, was seen lying on the floor and struggling to get up by two co-workers, Collin Schemenauer and TouFue Lee. They quickly told their Team Lead, Alexis Boehm, who radioed the Department Manager, Jesse Salmon, who immediately called 911. Gary was transferred by Eau Claire City Fire & Rescue ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital. Unfortunately, three days later, Gary passed away on Monday, June 30th. Gary was 73 years old and had worked for Menards since 1997. We understand there will be an autopsy conducted. OSHA did a thorough inspection of the building and it doesn’t appear there were any safety issues, but nonetheless we are very saddened by the loss of one our long-time, well-respected team members and express our deepest sympathy to Gary’s family and friends.”
