Teen rescuer nominated for honor

MADISON (WKOW) -- Dane County Sheriff's officials nominated 19-year old Tyler Stoflet for a citizen's award, after Stoflet rescued two people from a crash, submerged car in a highway ditch pond in the Town of Burke.

"If I'm the only one willing or able to help, I'm going to do it," Stoflet tells 27 News.

Stoflet and friends were driving on Highway 19 just before 10 p.m. June 26 when they witnessed a dump truck rear end a Toyota Camry at highway speed and send the Camry into a roll into the ditch.

Ron Gundrum of Waunakee and his 15-year old daughter were inside the car, and Gundrum tells 27 News the car almost immediately filled up with water.

"I pulled on the door lever, couldn't get out, couldn't feel through the window or anything like that," Gundrum says. "I did have that thought that I wasn't going to make it, and this is how it's going to end."

Gundrum says he heard someone screaming outside the car and asking about the condition of those inside.. He says it was Stoflet, who had waded into the murky, four foot deep water.

"With all the might I had, I pried open the door," Stoflet tells 27 News.

"I'm just thankful there are people like Tyler out there, who saw someone in need, and didn't hesitate, and was there to help" Gundrum says.

Sheriff's spokesperson Elise Schaffer says the 28-year old driver of the dump truck was located a short time after the collision. Schaffer says it's possible investigators will recommend to the Dane County District Attorney that hit and run charges be lodged against him.
