Three rescued after boat sinks on Lake Mendota

Madison (WKOW) – Three people were rescued Sunday after the boat they were on started taking on water and quickly sank near Governor’s Island in Lake Mendota.

According to the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, officials responded at 11:30 a.m. to a report of a sinking boat. The boat, a 15-foot 1976 tri-hull motor boat, started taking on water and very quickly sank 150 yards off of the shore of Governor’s Island. It was nearly vertical, with the motor resting on the lake bottom in 13 feet of water.

The three boaters were rescued from the lake by another nearby boaters, who saw the boat sink. The three rescued boaters were not wearing life jackets; one was unable to swim.

The sunken boat was towed to the Warner Park boat launch.
