Federal grant to help laid-off Oshkosh workers

Posted: Updated:

OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Labor is providing nearly half a million dollars in assistance for the workers who were laid off by the defense arm of Oshkosh Corp. in recent months.

The agency is providing about $470,000 to help retrain about 230 Oshkosh Defense workers. The employees learned in April their jobs were being eliminated.

The grant will provide workers with training for in-demand occupations, as well as career counseling and job-search assistance.

The grant was awarded to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. It will be administered by the Fox Valley Workforce Development Board.

Oshkosh Corp. said in April it was cutting about 700 hourly positions and 60 salaried positions. It said the decision was driven by lower demand for its mine-resistant trucks and other military vehicles.
