Chippewa County (WQOW) - Charges have been dropped against two men who cooked up a scheme to get out of prison early.
In 2010, a Stanley prison inmate, Jimmy Baldwin, who is a convicted killer, allegedly used forged documents to walk out of prison more than 50 years early. Another inmate, Eddie Evans was the alleged mastermind of the scheme. He allegedly forged documents to shorten the length of his supervision after he was released, and eliminated time he was supposed to serve in another state.
Now, the Chippewa County DA Steve Gibbs has dropped the charges against both men.
Baldwin is already serving a 45-year-sentence and the DA says they lack evidence against him, meaning a conviction would be hard to get.
Evans is also serving time: 8 years of hard labor in Louisiana and the DA says prosecuting him is not in the best interest of the state of Wisconsin.
A third man, Henry Spencer was sentenced for attempted escaped. The judge added a year-and-a-half onto the sentence he is currently serving for an armed robbery in Milwaukee.
