Emergency training at Prairie Island Nuclear Plant

Posted: Updated:
WELCH, Minn. (KTTC) -- The town of Welch was buzzed with police and emergency crews Tuesday afternoon as a training exercise took place at the Prairie Island Nuclear Facility.

Members of the federal government were in Red Wing grading several different categories as several different agencies worked together to respond to a mock incident at the nuclear facility.

The Red Wing Police Department worked in tandem with surrounding counties and agencies to make sure they are prepared in the event that there is an emergency at the power plant such as a case involving hostile action.

"We've been doing drills ever since the nuclear power plant's been here, but it's been mostly, radiation leak, and leading up to this it's been our first hostile action based," said Sgt. Marty Kelly of the Red Wing Police Department.

In the past few months, the nuclear plant has carried out several pre-drills to prepare all those involved for Tuesday's testing with the federal government agencies.
