National Night Out aims to stop crime in our neighborhoods

Posted: Updated:

FITCHBURG (WKOW) -- Fitchburg police are joining in a national effort to prevent crime right here in our area.

The department held its annual National Night Out Crime Day Picnic at McKee Farms Park in Fitchburg Saturday afternoon. The event aims to create partnerships between police and the community.

Officers showed off their emergency equipment and helped families get involved.

"Otherwise most people don't have a lot of contact with the police department, so this is a very relaxed picnic-type setting where they can get together and tell us what's happening in their community and then maybe we can work together and partnership to try to prevent crime from happening," says Officer Jay Wilson with Fitchburg police.

More than 16,000 communities across the country hold their own National Night Out events.
