2014 U.S. Chainsaw Sculpture Championship

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Wood-chips decorate Carson Park today where talented carvers are sawing into their soon-to-be masterpieces.

At the Paul Bunyan Logging Camp inside Eau Claire's Carson Park is where you'll find the 2014 U.S. Open Chainsaw Sculpture Championship. Carvers from all over the world were invited to come. Ten are competing this year. They have 20 hours; spread out over the course of four days, to complete their works of art. Judges will pick the winner this Sunday at noon.

"When we walk around, the number one thing we are going to look for is the wow factor. When we walk up, how does that grab us? Then it's the degree of difficulty: the composition, how well they did it, if they made over cuts, or if they didn't finish, we can see that," says Jerry Schiefer, the head judge of the competition.

To wrap up the competition, the carvings will be auctioned off. 50% of the proceeds will go to the artist and 50% will go to the Paul Bunyan Logging Camp. You're invited to watch the carvers at work, for information about admission head to their website.

NEWS RELEASE FROM VISIT EAU CLAIRE:

Eau Claire, WI - The Paul Bunyan Logging Camp in Carson Park is set to host the U.S. Open Chainsaw Sculpture Championship, August 7-10, 2014, as the event features the best chainsaw carving artists from Germany, Japan, Wales and the United States.

Designing with the theme of wildlife in mind, the carvers will turn 8-foot simple logs into stunning works of art. Competition carvers will have 20 hours to complete their project, carving all day Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning. On Sunday, a professional judging committee will award first through fourth places using international chainsaw competition standards to complete the competition. The pieces will then be auctioned off to conclude the event. Takao Hiyashi from Japan, who won first place the past two years, will be back to attempt for three consecutive wins. Guest carvers will also be on hand daily creating smaller pieces of art that will also be auctioned off.

Friday night a social event will be held from 5-10 p.m. Admission is $5 and includes a slice of pizza. Visitors will be able to meet the artists and speak with them about their work. There will be a quick-carve competition where artists will create an entire sculpture in one hour and the pieces will then be auctioned off.

Saturday, Betty Cowley will be presenting Stalag Wisconsin throughout the day and Charlie Schaaf will be at the event with historical model trains. Other activities throughout this family-friendly event include apple carving, arts and crafts, and games and inflatable rides by Rock & Roll To Go Plus.

A variety of food will also be available for purchase throughout the event.
