Middleton firefighters & police face off to support child with cancer

Posted: Updated:

MIDDLETON (WKOW) -- It was a Battle of the Badges Saturday morning in Middleton, as firefighters took on the city's police officers in a game of softball.

The annual rivalry is all for a good cause. Money raised goes to families affected by childhood cancer.

This year, the teams helped support Blake Rickert. The four-year-old boy was diagnosed with Burkitt's leukemia earlier this year and he's been getting aggressive treatments. Blake and his parents Jill and Kevin live in Fitchburg but they've been spending much of their time in the hospital. Luckily, he's in remission.

"He's done with all his chemotherapy and he has been done for three months now and this last week we had more good news that they did an ultra sound of his stomach and they did bloodwork and there still is no sign so it's a very positive outlook, his parents tell 27 News.

It was the third annual Battle of the Badges on Saturday. This year, organizers added a 5K fun run/walk before the softball game.
