City approves funding to make High Bridge improvements

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Plans to create a new pedestrian bridge in Eau Claire are moving forward.

The Eau Claire City Council voted in favor of providing the money needed to make improvements to the High Bridge, near the Xcel Energy dam.

The project has a price tag of $1.29 million. A state grant will cover $500,000. The city will pay for the rest.

The project should be underway by fall. The city says it hopes to have it completed before the first snowfall. Some of the improvements include railings, a new walkway and lighting on the bridge to make it safe.

The council also voted in favor of purchasing a parcel of land near I-94 and Cameron Street for $29,000.The city has discussed the possibility of building a new exit from I-94 that would funnel traffic into downtown Eau Claire. Council member Lewis is the only one who voted against it.
