UPDATE: Sheriff talks about no confidence vote after defeating challenger

Posted:

Dunn County (WQOW) - Dunn County Sheriff Dennis Smith will be the only name on the ballot on November 4th. Late Tuesday night we learned he beat his sole challenger, medical examiner Chris Kruse.

The win is built upon a bit of tension. It was just last month Dunn County Deputies declared no confidence in the sheriff. They say Sheriff Smith lacks the capacity required to effectively lead and manage the department.

Wednesday WQOW News 18 asked Sheriff Smith how he plans to handle any hard feelings. He says if they can move on, he can too. He says the only thing that matters is keeping the public safe.

WQOW News 18 did ask the sheriff if he plans to address the vote of no confidence with his deputies. He says, "I am still kind of putting together a plan of how we can best get past this and frankly if somebody really feels that badly about it that they're going to hate coming to work... Then maybe they ought to look someplace else for a job and move on."

While the deputies did not provide any specific concerns they had about the sheriff, WQOW News 18 did ask Smith what he thought the issues were.  The sheriff says deputies believe he can be too media friendly during investigations.  "Recently I went to a call with them and I ended up letting the media in and it was like I was Satan because I did that. The supervisors and I had a meeting and they scolded me for it and I apologized, it'll never happen again," explains Sheriff Smith.

He says in the future he will do a better job of communicating with his staff on what should and shouldn't be released, but he does believe it needs to be balanced.

WQOW News 18 did reach out to the deputies union. A representative says the deputies are not going to respond to the election results as it won't change the outcome.

Since no republicans entered the race, we expect Sheriff Smith to be re-elected this November.

Dunn (WQOW) - Sheriff Dennis Smith will be the only name on the ballot in that race come November.
Sheriff Smith defeated challenger Chris Kruse in Tuesday's primary election by 12% of the vote. Sheriff Smith watched Tuesday night's results come in at Cancun Restaurant in Menomonie along with family and friends. Last month, Dunn County deputies declared no confidence in the sheriff. They say Sheriff Smith lacks the capacity required to effectively lead and manage the department. They went on to endorse Kruse. But Dunn County voters backed Smith."I'm just happy that the voters decided to keep me on board and keep me as the sheriff for the next four years," said Sheriff Smith. "I want to do a good job for them and make sure they are safe and sound."

Smith has been the Dunn County sheriff since 2001.
