Residents help fill school backpacks for hundreds of local kids

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Hundreds of Eau Claire school kids will have backpacks full of school supplies, thanks to an outpouring of support from the community.

Volunteers from United Health Care filled 650 backpacks on Thursday with folders, notebooks, pens and other supplies. Everything was donated by the Boys and Girls Club of Eau Claire.

"We're trying to help those that could use a little extra help, so that every child comes to school ready to learn," said Eau Claire Area School District Administrative Assistant Patti Iverson. "We want all of our students to be successful, and having the right tools to do that is really important."

The backpacks will be handed out at individual schools during the last week of August. Exact dates and times will be posted on school doors. Parents are asked to bring their letter that certifies they qualify for free or reduced school meals.
