HS FB Two-A-Days: Colfax & Elk Mound

Colfax, Elk Mound (WQOW) -- News 18 Sports Two-A-Days visits a pair of Dunn-St. Croix rivals, Elk Mound and Colfax.

The Vikings were a playoff team in 2013 after a 3-3 finish in the DSC, the first postseason appearance for Colfax since 2006.  The Vikings return plenty of experienced personnel, and head coach Mark Maloney likes how well practices have gone so far, heading into Saturday's scrimmage.

"Everything looks really good here in practice," Maloney says, "looks good on paper, they draw it up and they do it exactly how it looks, but now come Saturday, you're going up against teams that are going to be giving you different looks and they're not going to do exactly what you want them to do, so we're going to expect a lot of these kids to adjust and make things happen on Saturday."

Maloney says the Vikings' experience, combined with last season's success, has led to some higher expectations.

"We have a very veteran team this year," Maloney says, "we have thirteen, fourteen seniors on the roster, a lot of those seniors have been playing football since they were freshmen, playing varsity football since they were freshmen, and we're expecting a lot out of them."

"It's nice, you miss it," says Colfax senior offensive & defensive tackle Trevor Olson about being back at practice, "a whole summer just lifting and you just want to get out there and start cracking with your teammates, and showing who's the best on the team, who hits the hardest."

Colfax kicks off the season on Friday, August 22, when the Vikings will host Eleva-Strum.

Elk Mound won the Dunn-St. Croix in 2012, but the Mounders went winless in the conference last season.  Head coach Dave Lew says even if there aren't a lot of outside expectations for his program, that's okay by him.

"I see ourselves landing...anywhere [in the conference]," says Lew, "you know, nobody sees us doing anything because of last season.  Well, I think our kids are going to work hard, every week, if we don't, you know, make mistakes, we can compete in any game, in my opinion."

Lew says his guys brought a good work ethic over the summer, and some veteran leadership is starting to emerge on the team.

"And this year, we have ten really, really good seniors that'll be good leaders," says Lew, "you know, they're all offensive linemen and a couple running backs, and it should be, we're leaning on those guys this year, and we're leaning on them to lead our young guys."

Elk Mound kicks off the season on Friday, August 22, when the Mounders will host Chetek-Weyerhaeuser.
