Monona Grove ready to begin title defense

Posted: Updated:
MONONA (WKOW) -

The Monona Grove football team is used to having a target on their backs. The Silver Eagles have won five straight Badger South titles. However, this season they won't just have the conference gunning for them. They'll have the entire state breathing down their necks.

Last season, the Silver Eagles claimed their first state championship since 1984. Much of the top talent from that roster has since graduated. However, the cupboard is not bare. Head coach Mike Stassi has five first team all-conference selections returning. So, this won't exactly be a rebuilding season.

"It is and it isn't. We lose a great amount of seniors and some great kids, a starting quarterback, a fullback/middle linebacker type, and it's really tough to replace those kids. We've got new starters in a lot of key positions."

Stassi also has some elite level talent returning. Toren Young burst on to the scene as a sophomore. Now, the junior running back will be counted on to carry the load after rushing for more than 1,000 yards last season. On defense, Zach Stinson will look to cause havoc again this season. The senior defensive lineman had 18 sacks a year ago.

The Silver Eagles may have just soared to the top of the mountain, but Young says that only increased the desire to reach those heights again.

"Coach Stassi stresses that all the time. You never want to be satisfied. Why have one when you can have two?"
