Report: Badgers to start McEvoy

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -

Badgers head coach Gary Andersen has stated he has no plans to publicly announce his starting quarterback prior to the season opener against LSU. Privately, however, it appears Andersen has made his decision. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the coaching staff is planning to start Tanner McEvoy in the opener.

After struggling last fall, McEvoy switched positions. He finished the year playing safety. However, the junior made it clear he wanted another crack at quarterback. So, McEvoy spent the spring and fall closing the gap on incumbent starter Joel Stave. McEvoy felt much more comfortable with his performance this fall compared to his first year on campus.

"I think I've had a pretty strong camp. Obviously, there's some things I'd like to have back on some big days, but I think I had a pretty strong camp."

The quarterback race has been neck-and-neck all fall. Stave has appeared to be the slightly better passer to most outside observers. However, McEvoy brings an added element to the game with his athleticism. McEvoy's ability to be a dual threat likely gave him the edge. Andersen has stated that both quarterbacks could play. McEvoy says he would be fine with splitting the quarterback duties.

"I just want to be on the field. It is what it is. Whatever position they want, whatever package they want, what the situation is...I'll go out for the team and try to get a win."

The Badgers open the season Aug. 30 against LSU in Houston, Texas.
