Eau Claire (WQOW) - 467 pairs of shoes, each pair represents a life taken by a gun in Wisconsin over the past year. That includes violent acts, suicides and accidents. The shoes were placed at the Eau Claire County Court House this morning.
The shoes are courtesy of the Milwaukee based Wisconsin Anti Violence Effort, or WAVE. The group is on a five-city tour, hoping to prompt people to voice their opinions to the new legislators who will take office in January. The group is pushing for a law that requires mandatory background checks for all gun sales. They also want people to get guns out of the homes of those who struggle with violent behaviors and substance abuse.
"My daughter who was five at the time said, 'So many kids are being killed with guns, fix it mommy.' and I couldn't turn away from that. I find it very shameful that our children are scared because of the gun violence in our society and I think it's up to us as adults to do something about that," says Jeri Bonavia, the Executive Director of WAVE.
The tour heads next to Wausau. It will end in Milwaukee on Saturday.
