UPDATE: Chippewa County deputy recovering from stabbing, leaves hospital

Chippewa County (WQOW)- A Chippewa County investigator, who was stabbed last week, left the hospital Wednesday and got a hero's welcome home.

Investigator Bill Gray was given a sheriff's department escort from the hospital to the county courthouse. Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk says nearly every county employee came outside to greet Gray and shake his hand. Kowalczyk says Gray suffered at least six knife wounds to his face and neck, and about a dozen stab wounds to one of his hands that he apparently received while trying to ward off his attacker.

Gray will now continue recovering at home. Kowalczyk says Gray will likely require plastic surgery in the future, and will return to work when he's ready.

The DCI is still investigating last week's incident and will eventually submit a report to the district attorney.

According to the Sheriff, Deputy Gray was stabbed by a man from the United Kingdom, who was being questioned about a missing girl. Gray shot and killed the man. Sheriff Kowalczyk says he has no doubt the shooting will be deemed justified.
