Area elementary school receives $500 grant to help with homework assistance

Colby (WQOW) - Teachers and students are teaming up at an area elementary school to keep kids ahead on their homework.

Jennifer Peterson and Sara Voss, two teachers from Colby Elementary School, recently created a homework assistance program. It pairs volunteer middle school students with elementary kids in need of some extra homework help. The middle school students come in before school starts, Tuesday through Friday, to help kids with math, reading, spelling. So we at WQOW News 18 wanted to help them out. They are November's Tools for Schools award recipients.

"We've had some really nice positive reports. We have a student who's really floundered in spelling who has finally passed a spelling test, so it's really nice to get those little tidbits back from teachers, saying that their kids are seeing some benefit from it," said Peterson.

With the $500, the school plans to buy more studying materials like flashcards and calculators, and also reward the volunteers. WQOW News 18, along with Royal Credit Union and Fired Up Pizza Company, is happy to be able to help area schools continue these amazing programs.
