COPY-Military report: Kiel soldier committed suicide in Kosovo
KIEL, Wis. (AP) - U.S. military officials have announced a soldier originally from Wisconsin died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Kosovo last year.
The Stars and Stripes newspaper, published by the U.S. Department of Defense, reported Monday that Army Staff Sgt. Heidi Ruh committed suicide on May 9, 2014, at Camp Bondsteel. An investigation into her death was conducted by the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command and closed last month.
Military officials initially said Ruh died in a noncombat-related incident on the Army base in Kosovo.
Ruh joined the military in January 2003 as a biomedical equipment specialist and was assigned to the 1st Medical Brigade at Fort Hood, Texas. She was deployed to Kosovo last January and was attached to Kosovo Force's Multinational Battle Group-East.
The 32-year-old grew up in Kiel. She lived most recently in Barrington, Illinois.
