Eau Claire (WQOW) --  The first state competition of the WIAA winter sports calendar is boys swimming and diving.

The 91st-annual version of that event begins Friday at the UW Natatorium in Madison.

The Eau Claire Alliance co-op team heads to state following a first place finish at the Division 1 Hudson sectional.  Eau Claire has taken seventh or better at state in each of the past five seasons.  The team's goal this time around is to finish in the top five in the state.

"We know that this is the best of the best down there," says Alliance head coach Dylan Leonard, "and to have eleven entries and eleven splashes, and then three relays down there, that's a lot for our team. To show for our sectionals. And it's not just winners. They would have qualified, all of them, no matter what."

"We're ranked seventh right now for overall seeded finish, and definitely we can do better than that," says Alliance senior Levi Soborowicz, "because when you hit the water at state, you just go and that's where it really counts and really matters. And I think that's what it's all about."

Division 2 competition is Friday evening, with the Division 1 schools in the pool on Saturday.
