Eau Claire (WQOW) - Nearly 5000 toys, books and stuffed animals were donated to area hospitals Monday by Katharine's Wish.
Katharine's Wish is a local charity founded by a then nine-year-old girl after she being hospitalized. Katharine Rhoten, now 16 years old, has been distributing donated items since 2008.
This year broke a record, doubling last year's total. Since 2008, the charity collected a total of 15,000 items to be dispersed to hospitalized children throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Monday, the items were divided and distributed to Mayo Clinic Health System, HSHS Sacred Heart, St. Joseph's Hospital and Marshfield Clinic.
"Just one toy can put one more smile on a face so to have 4700, it's incredible, that's how many more people we can help and brighten a day. And that's what it's all about it's just trying to comfort someone," Rhoten said.
Rhoten's goal is to one day be able to distribute donations in all 50 states.
