Eau Claire (WQOW) - On Sunday, workers could be seen constructing a new greenhouse near the community garden off of Jeffers Road.
It's the first greenhouse of its kind in the Eau Claire area, because it will offer rental space for residents interested in planting seeds. While it may appear small at first glance, there's enough room for 16 people to rent. Each space is 18”x24” and $10 to rent for the year. A greenhouse is different from a community garden because the shelter it provides allows for long-term gardening.
It was a little more than $2,000 to build. The money was raised by grants and community donations.
"A large part of the mission at extension is to provide education and resources to the community. So we can use this as a space to start teaching seed starting classes and just help people learn more about where their food is coming from and how to grow things and how to do that in a really sustainable manner that can also save people money," said Hanna Terwilliger, of UW Extension.
The greenhouse is opening on May 1st. There are still spots available, so if you're interested in renting one, contact the Eau Claire County Extension office. Click here for their website.
