Eau Claire (WQOW) - Volunteers gathered at Feed My People Thursday to pack hundreds of emergency meals for seniors in need in Eau Claire.
For the past three years, the food bank has partnered with the Aging and Disability Resource Center to pack emergency food boxes for over 350 seniors in Eau Claire.
The food boxes are given to seniors, who keep them for a snowy day when Meals on Wheels drivers cannot make deliveries, or when any extra nutrition is needed.
"Hunger does not discriminate on age," Feed My People Program Specialist Sarah Laney said. "We have wonderful volunteers here at Feed My People. We just put out the word, and they come in forces to set up this assembly line for us to pack the boxes."
Feed My People said one in nine seniors in west central Wisconsin are food insecure, and the ADRC said their need for help could grow.
"It is a growing population, and we need to make sure we can provide for the population as they continue to grow," ADRC Volunteer Coordinator Kaylynn Stahlbusch said. "Homebound seniors are unable to make their own meals. They have have spouses that are passing away. Caregivers are becoming more and more busy working longer, so they are not able to be there for their loved ones."
The boxes were all packed Thursday, but any new volunteers are welcome to deliver the boxes throughout the week. Anyone interested can contact the ADRC at (715) 839-4763.
