Two families recipients of Morrie's Mazda's "60 Days of Giving" campaign

Eau Claire (WQOW) - It was Christmas all over again for two area families. They spent Wednesday unwrapping a well-deserved surprise.

On Wednesday, Morrie's Mazda rolled out its final giveaway, part of the "60 Days of Giving" campaign. Morrie's awarded the Herrick's from Eau Claire a used, 2006 Grand Prix, and Gordy's Market gave them two, $500 gas cards.

Patrick Herrick said his family van was broken and unsafe to drive. "Our previous vehicle pretty much died. We had to bungee cord the door shut, and the brakes went out on it completely."

The family of four was nominated by their landlord, Marit Barquist of Woodsedge Apartments. "They're very kind, very helpful,” Barquist said. “The car couldn't have gone on to a more deserving family."

The Herrick's have two teenagers, newly employed, who've been walking to work, while their mom took the bus. Bill Bertrand, of Morrie's Mazda, said the Herrick's are absolutely deserving. “Mom works full-time. Pat's a disabled vet. So, he can't work. And, they're just in that rock in a hard spot. They have a car that just doesn't run anymore,” Bertrand said. “We really felt that giving them this vehicle would give them the kind of leg up that they needed to get a fresh start."

The second recipient, Jeff Kacures, from Mondovi, received a $1,500 gift certificate from Furnish 123. Kacures was nominated by his wife, Julie Kacures, because of his long-time battle with kidney failure. Julie said her husband is an inspiration to her and many. “We see every day that he fights to stay with us by going to dialysis,” Julie said. “The dialysis has been bad enough, but there are all the other complications with that. A year and a half ago, he lost his leg because of it."

It's a gift both families say couldn't have come at a better time. Jeff said he was shocked to have been selected as a recipient of the program. “It's amazing. I'm thinking about getting a new kitchen table. My wife wants also a new dresser."

Morrie's Mazda said it received 400 nominations for Wednesday's giveaways, but only two lucky winners were selected. Congratulations, again, to the recipients!
