Posted:

Chippewa County (WQOW)- We now know the name of the man whose body was found lying in the grass in Chippewa County. The Chippewa County Sheriff's Department says the death is now considered a homicide.

The sheriff's department said Kenneth J. Patterson, 31, was murdered. Chippewa County Coroner Ronald Patten said the body had a single gunshot wound. Patterson's last known address was in Eau Claire. The department said it's continuing the investigation into the homicide, along with the Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigations, the City of Chippewa Falls Police Department, along with a number of other local law enforcement agencies.

According to Sheriff Kowalczyk, on Monday morning, someone walking in the area of 83rd Avenue and 162nd Street in the town of Eagle Point spotted a body lying in the grass and called 911. Law enforcement officers and EMS arrived to find Patterson's body. The sheriff's department said Patterson was well known by area law enforcement. He had been jailed in Chippewa County in the past year. At one point, the sheriff said, the man was homeless.

Sheriff Kowalczyk told News 18 the man had visible wounds on his body but would not elaborate. Sheriff Kowalczyk said investigators have reason to believe the man was possibly dumped out of a vehicle. The sheriff said investigators have found a blood trail leading from the roadway to the lawn where the body was found.

Sheriff Kowalczyk said people in the area reported hearing possible gunshots Sunday night around 10 o'clock and also recalled hearing a vehicle leaving the area.

No direct arrests have been made at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department at 715-726-7700, the Tipster Line at 715-726-4563 or simply dialing 911.
