MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The president of the State Bar of Wisconsin wants to change course and deny a felon an award after the nomination drew criticism from Attorney General Brad Schimel. The bar announced Tuesday that Stephan Addison had won the 2018 Jack DeWitt WisLAP Volunteer Award, which recognizes a lawyer, judge or group that helps the Wisconsin Lawyers Assistance Program.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Legislature's budget committee has signed off on the University of Wisconsin System's plan for divvying up a chunk of new state aid according to schools' performance. The state budget handed the system $26.25 million in new aid but tied the money to performance in four areas: student success, student profess toward graduating, workforce contributions and enhancing efficiency.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Vel Phillips, a civil rights pioneer who helped lead open housing marches in Milwaukee in the 1960s and was the first black person elected to a Wisconsin statewide office, has died. She was 94. Phillips' son, Michael Phillips, says she died Tuesday while in hospice care at a hospital. Vel Phillips was the first black woman to graduate from the University of Wisconsin law school and first woman and African-American elected to the Milwaukee Common Council

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Legislature's finance committee is giving the Department of Corrections more money to cover prisoner health care. The agency was budgeted $80.6 million in fiscal year 2017-18 to inmate health care but now expects to spend $90.7 million thanks to rising drug costs, more hospital visits for the prison system's aging inmate population and rising contract nurse costs.
