PLATTEVILLE (KCRG) – A Wisconsin couple is hoping for a special reunion after rescuing a dog from the Mississippi River.
Rhonda and Jerry Stoney told our Cedar Rapids affiliate, KCRG, they saw the dog struggling late last month in the Mississippi River while they were camping at the Big H campground near Cassville.
“We were sitting by our cabin outside and this little dog came in,” said Rhonda Stoney. “This little beagle came in from the Mississippi River. She was very wet and hungry.”
The Stoneys say they don't know how long the dog was in the water, but they believe the dog fell out of a boat or got swept away. They say the water of the river went up to the road.
A local veterinarian told the Stoneys that the beagle is deaf, but they could not determine whether or not the flood waters led to her hearing being damaged.
The Stoneys have decided to name the beagle Annie, in part because they found her during their wedding anniversary.
If you know of Annie's owner, you're asked to email the Stoneys at firstname.lastname@example.org.
They released an update to 27 News, which is below:
“Annie's owner has not yet come forward. but there have been offers to adopt her. She has adjusted so well and our dog is accepting her. So we plan to keep her with us unless her owner comes forward and convinces us that she belongs to them and that they truly want her back. She seemed to be showing signs of separation anxiety which was concerning us. Especially with being out of town last weekend. A family member and a friend came in to take care of her and our dog and said they both did Great!!! No accidents of any kind :-) And Annie was not howling nonstop when left alone . As she had been in the first days with us. . I can't deny it that we are totally falling in love with her and she is no doubt getting very comfortable here and enjoying her time with us. But someone has taken very good care of her . And if this were our dog....I would want the people that found her to do everything they could to get her back to us. We realize that Annie may not just be lost and that there are so many other scenarios. Though difficult to imagine with such a sweet dog.”
