Altoona (WQOW) - The Eau Claire County Highway Department is looking for season workers to help plow snow in the winter.
The highway department said it is hoping to hire add eight seasonal, on-call workers to help the county's current 33 snowplow drivers keep roads clear this winter. The department hosted an open house at the highway shop Wednesday, so those interested could see the equipment and learn more about the positions available. The highway department said it hopes to take advantage of seasonal employees that are laid off over the winter, like construction workers. This is the first time the highway department has added seasonal staff to help lessen the winter workload for plow drivers.
"When it snows, everyone is called out to respond and go out and plow, so the issue is, when you are out plowing for extended periods of time, we need people to backfill rather than keep them going," Eau Claire County Highway Commissioner Jon Johnson said. "To have the resources of some additional people who are qualified, and we train them, that is going to help us provide a better service."
The highway department said those interested should have a commercial driver's license. Starting pay is $19.59 an hour. The online application closes Sunday.
