Wisconsin conservationists pushing for protection of public hunting lands
Madison (WKOW) - With just a few days left until the start of the gun deer season in Wisconsin, some conservationists are making a push to protect public hunting lands.
The Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters joined other supporters in speaking about what they call a growing threat on Wednesday.
Officials believe lawmakers and others should be held accountable to keep the hunting lands public in Wisconsin in an effort to preserve the state's heritage.
“Our public lands are often the primary source of the critical habitat necessary to make sure that all of our wildlife species continue to thrive,” said Mike Spors, the National Conservation Director for the group Whitetails Unlimited.
Officials say the public lands and the deer hunting season have a big economic impact on the state.
