Rep. Dan Kapanke to seek recount in state Senate race

Posted:

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Republican Dan Kapanke is planning to seek a recount in his bid to unseat state Senate Minority Leader Jennifer Shilling.

Wisconsin Elections Commission spokesman Reid Magney says the commission received a call Tuesday morning from a Kapanke attorney who said Kapanke will request the recount on Wednesday.

If Kapanke follows through, the four counties in the 32nd Senate District, Crawford, La Crosse, Monroe and Vernon, can begin counting as soon as they wish. Magney said the counties must begin counting no later than Monday. Magney says he expects the recount would take three to six days.

Returns show Shilling with a 56-vote lead over Kapanke. Despite the uncertainty, she's expected to run for her leadership post again when Senate Democrats meet Tuesday afternoon to select officers.
