New testing approved in Avery case

MANITOWOC COUNTY (WKOW) -- A state court Friday approved an order for new,  independent scientific testing in connection with Steven Avery's convictions for the 2005 sexual assault and killing of Teresa Halbach.

The order from Judge Angela Sutkiewicz to allow the testing followed a stipulation of agreement between Avery's Illinois-based attorney, Kathleen Zellner and representatives of the state department of justice.

The convictions of Avery and his then-teen nephew Brendan Dassey gained global attention through the 2015 Netflix presentation Making a Murderer.

Zellner has wanted to use new DNA testing techniques on blood evidence from Avery, and has maintained testing may show the blood pre-dates the Halbach killing.

Last week, a panel of three federal appellate court judges imposed a stay of a planned, supervised release of Dassey while the appeal of his convictions are pending.
