Barron County (WQOW) -- A Chetek man faces burglary and theft charges after police say he quenched his thirst with two cans of soda at the scene.
Charges were filed against Brandon M. Schultz in Barron County on Wednesday. According to the complaint, police responded to a burglary call at a Chetek home in May of 2014. The homeowners told police a number of items were missing, including two flat-screen televisions, a bear carving and a binoculars. In total, the homeowners believe more than $3,500 worth of items were stolen.
Police also found an empty beer can, as well as cans of Diet Pepsi and Diet Dr. Pepper at the scene. Investigators sent the cans to the state crime lab for testing and got a DNA match for Schultz from both soda cans.
During a 2016 interview with police, Schultz admitted to breaking into the home and stealing the items with his girlfriend and another man. Neither of those people have been charged. Schultz told police he broke into the home because he had heard that there was money somewhere inside the home and the owners would not be there.
Schultz makes his initial appearance December 6.
