Mabel Tainter Theater needs your help to fund repairs

Menomonie (WQOW) - CNN once dubbed it one of the most beautiful theaters in the world, and it's right here in the Chippewa Valley.

At the Mabel Tainter Theater the show must go on, but the building has seen better days.

The 126-year-old Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts is in the midst of a five year roof repair project which started after water was spotted leaking in the attic.

As News 18 reported in August, the RCU Foundation donated $21,000, allowing organizers to kick off work.

Mabel Tainter Executive Director, Steve Renfree, said there's still a long way to go, and they need more funding.

Overall the repairs are expected to cost about $90,000, and it's necessary to preserve the theater's history.

"When you look around at the gorgeous architecture, the Romanesque architecture on the outside, and you look at the Moorish designs throughout the theater, the hand stenciling in every single room, we know that water damage would be disastrous," Renfree said. "So, we have to take care of problems that are beginning to seep in, and eradicate those so that we don't have bigger problems down the road."

Next spring the center hopes to start working on the exterior with gutter and masonry repairs.
