Eau Claire man allegedly sets fire to his apartment before sexually assaulting a woman who came to help

Eau Claire (WQOW) - An Eau Claire man is charged with setting a fire in his apartment, then sexually assaulting someone who came to help will undergo a competency exam.

Just after 3 a.m. Monday, firefighters got to Wesley Halliday's residence at Park Towers Apartments on Farwell St.

Halliday told firefighters he started the fire by burning paper on his stove to warm up.

A resident who came to help, told investigators she entered Halliday's apartment, and he pinned her against the wall and sexually assaulted her.

Police said Halliday's answers to their questions did not make sense. They said he did apologize for touching the woman, saying he is sick and not doing well.

Halliday was charged Tuesday with six counts, including arson, endangering safety, and sexual assault.

If he does post bond, the judge orders that he not use matches or lighters
